I recently read a book that dealt with the impact of
the civil war on europe. It stated that the majority of
people in france were pro confederate as well as
the nobility, in england the regular folk were very
pro union but the nobility were pro confederate. in
germany it was the total opposite, the german
people were pro union as well as the nobility. In
fact the north raised money by selling bonds in
germany.

The book made the case that the reason that the
german people were strong union supporters was
that many germans immigrants wrote home in
support of the union. but what the book didn`t say
was why the german nobility were so strong in their
support of the north, I realize that the french and
english nobility felt a kinship for the southern aristocracy
but why didn`t the german nobility feel the same way?

U.S. plan to assassinate Hitler
Many people don't know this but we could have assassinated Hitler in 1944 before D-day but didn't because we assumed correctly that killing him would only prolong the war and that he would make a bunch of stupid mistakes and play right into our hands.

We knew when he was at Berchtesgarden, when he took his daily walks, that he walked way out in front of his security detail because that was really the only time he had to himself, where to parachute in whithout detection, plans for escape. The whole shabang.

People argued correctly that because of the way the German military command structure was set-up, if Hitler were kept in power, he would undoubtedly screw things up in favor of the Allies. Which is exactly what he did.

He kept several panzer divisions at Calais for a week after Normandie. When he finally capitulated he didn't even release enough troops to get the job done, they were caught in the Falaise pocket and annihilated. He ordered that the best gun in the world, the shturmgivar not be made (but they made some anyway) he ordered that the ME 262 be used only for bombing until it was too late. Huge resources were put into the V-weapons but in the final result the cost per allied casualty was astronomical on an already strained economy. The battle of the Bulge, which drained other scarce men, materiel, and fuel. And probably dozens of other mistakes.

So this begs the question: If we had asassinated him, do you think the war would have dragged on longer? Western doctors believed at the time that since he had both Parkensons disease and was an amphetamine addict, he would not have lived to see 1946 anyway. Would someone more competent stepped into his shoes after we killed him? Either Himmler or Goering, but Goering was a joke even to his peers. Heydrich was a shoe-in but was killed in 1942. Jodl? Bormann? Doenitz? Rommel?

What are your thoughts on this story?
I read something recently (somewhere) about a couple on German guns used in Russia during WW2. I had always thought that "The Paris gun" of WW1 was the biggest but this article claimed differently.

There were several mentioned in the article, all mobile railway guns:

1.) "Anzio Annie" which shelled the beach-head in Anzio, Sicily in 1943 and then backed into a railway tunnel to avoid detection from the air.

2.) The "Thor" gun, which I think was more of a gigantic mortar used during the seige of Leningrad, 42-44?

3.) The "Dora" gun. Used during the seige of Sabestapol in 1942-43? This last one was so fucking big as to defy logic. like the "Guns of Navarone" on wheels. From what I recall it took a whole train to make it, as it had to be assembled on site by a crew of 2500 soldiers. I don't remember the weight of the shells but they were absolutely massive. I also remember that it was more of a psycological warfare tool than anything else as it was fired less than a hundred times and was entirely impractical.

Footnote:

More recent history had the development of the HARP (High Altitude Research Project) gun in Canada by Gerald Bull. That was two WW2 16 inch naval guns attached end-to-end, and could send small packages into low-Earth orbit. (well so could the Paris gun) upon his assassination by the Israeli's in the 1990's he was working on a gun code-named Babylon that was to be put in a hollowed-out mountain and shot 300 miles into Israel. Then the Germans siezed the parts labled "Patroleum pipe". A scaled-down model of this was tested and DID work.

I have also seen pictures of a gun Hitler was building when we over-ran France that was to bombard London. Except this gun used a whole series of flammable gas combustion chambers to move the projectile up the barrel. Some say it would have worked.

The one thing I can say is that the Germans always had a fetish for size!
germany! I realize there are no clear cut answers
as to why, but I`d be interested to know if anyone
has any thoughts on this?

While I have various interests in history my
main passion is researching and writing on
various local breweries. While researching
I`ve came across many german brewers
and while most never gave a reason for
coming to America, I have found that a
few had fled germany for economic reasons
or to escape fighting.

The story of the Best family I thought interesting,
they founded what became the Pabst brewing co.
they left germany because they were more liberal
than most and found the climate there stifling if
not dangerous.

Now from the few books i`ve read that touched on
the society of germany during the mid to late 1800`s
it left me with the impression that germany was a
very conservative, even militaristic culture. Am I far
off the mark with my assumptions? would a german
that was liberal be considered dangerous? I`d love
to hear some thoughts on this subject!!!!

question might be better asked here than on
the the history forums. I read a book a few
years ago on the Battle of Berlin, in it I read
about this German General named Gotthard
Heinrici. I have found basic profiles of him
online and all the biographys on him seem to
be in german, does anyone know of a book
on him in english?
